It is understood the vehicle, which belonged to visitors to the historic site, is not the first to be targeted - leaving the community “angered”. The PSNI said: “At approximately 6.45pm [August 1], a rear window of a parked car was smashed and a handbag was taken. Local councillor, Sinn Féin’s Ronan McGinley, has hit out against the latest attack. “This is yet another break in to add to a string of incidents at the quiet spot on the lough shore,” he said. “Recent occurrences have included damage to vehicles and personal belongings being stolen. “The Old Cross should be a peaceful place free from this kind of worry,” he went on. “Unfortunately, the society we live has resulted in people becoming accustomed to this type of behaviour in our cities and towns. “Rightly or wrongly we assume rural areas like the lough shore should be free from this disgraceful behaviour. “Recent events have angered the local community and it will leave people wondering what is being done to help prevent this from happening Cllr McGinley continued: “I have started making enquiries into the overall number and seriousness of recent events. “When there is a clearer picture I will work to support whatever measures can be put in place to prevent this disgraceful activity from happening again.” Appealing for witnesses to come forward, PSNI Inspector Amanda Kenny said: “I would also always remind the public to take all handbags and valuables out of parked cars. “Thieves can often be opportunist and this simple crime prevention tip can deny them the opportunity to steal.”
